I would bet the farm fresh eggs that Burger Kings French Toast Sandwich will not start a breakfast sandwich war. The new French Toast Sandwich from Burger King sounds and looks amazing. However, it just hit the National market after a couple of years hiatus and local testing to mixed reviews. Our Burger King French Toast review goes under the hood to find out all the details.

Copycat Burger King French Toast Sandwich Recipe

We’re headed out to do a review of the new menu item at Burger King, then bring home the bacon and create a copycat Burger King French Toast Sandwich recipe that you can make at home, but better! That’s just how we roll at Throwdown Kitchen. The big 2021 breakfast sandwich surprise is the Maple butter sauce, so were quite excited about that.

For our copycat recipe, we’ll focus on the bread for the French toast first, then the maple butter sauce and finally crispy bacon to bring it all together. I think a quick tutorial about how to make a perfect plain omelet might also be needed.

Burger King French Toast Sandwich Review

The French Toast Sandwich At Burger King surprised me. After reading some early mixed reviews we didn’t really know what to expect. However, I made sure I had an open mind going in for our taste test.

Burger King offers 3 different versions of their new French Toast sandwich. The basics are the same. The breakfast sandwich is made with eggs, American cheese and French toast and a choice of breakfast sausage, bacon or black forest ham.

What Time Does Burger King Serve Breakfast

You have got to get to the restaurant early. Burger King does not offer all day breakfast service and the breakfast is only served until 10:30 am. Burger King opens at 6:00 am and stops serving breakfast at 10:30 am sharp. I am not concerned about them running out of the new French toast sandwich even though it’s a brand-new menu item and I have heard rumors of bacon shortages. I want the sausage sandwich, but I’ll settle for ham if I have to.

This is going to be a morning drive through experience and the car line is not too long. I waited about a minute to get to the BK order window. A friendly and pleasant greeting this morning from the takeout window staff was just what I was looking for. No delays and I’m on my way.

I think many places have really improved on the drive through experience during the pandemic and this Burger King restaurant in Randallstown, Maryland has exceeded my expectations this morning.

Missing Branded Packaging

For a new menu item, I was hoping to see some splashy packaging. Maybe even a foil pack like all the hot new chicken sandwiches. But alas, typical deli paper wrapping. Not even a nice cardboard box for the sandwich. The deli paper was engraved with the Croissant  logo, so I think they must be behind in their promotional activities.

In addition, the highly touted maple butter sauce is not packed for single servings yet. I ordered maple butter sauce on the side, and it was served in a small single use plastic cup with lid.

Quick Rant: Why roll out a new menu item nationwide if you do not have the right packaging?

How Does Burger King Cook Their French Toast

The French toast slices are a little smaller than I had imagined. They are about the size of a large English muffin and somewhat oblong. They have in fact served some time on the griddle because I can see the tell-tale signs of caramelization with a slight crisp to the brown edges. The French toast slices should be the star of this show, but they seemed to just be a bench player today. A good flavorful player, but not a shining star.

As I opened the sandwich the steam arose, and I could tell that the sandwich was served hot. Getting a hot sandwich at a fast food joint sometimes is hit or miss, and they got this one right on the money. I could see the melted American cheese atop the sausage patty and the smell was of breakfast maple syrup.

Inside the sandwich the rectangular eggs were soft and fluffy, but the sausage was a typical fast food patty with a hint of red pepper and sage. A little salt and pepper or some hot sauce  would help this sausage patty out.

The sandwich was good. Not great. Not excellent. But good and hearty morning fare. The maple butter sauce was supposed to shine, but fell a little short of expectations. I will definitely order this sandwich again, but I don’t think I’m trading in my Egg McMuffin with sausage and cheese just yet.

Make Burger Kings French Toast Sandwich At Home

For this copycat recipe of a better Burger King New French Toast sandwich you will need cinnamon swirl bread, eggs, half-and-half, sugar, vanilla, bacon, American cheese, Maple syrup, and butter.

How To Make Maple Butter Sauce

For the Maple Butter Spread combine unsalted butter (4 tbsp) and Maple syrup (4 tbsp) in a small saucepan Bring the mixture to a simmer and add heavy cream (1 tbsp). Whisk until combined and then remove from the heat. Refrigerate until ready to use.

This Maple butter sauce can be served with warm biscuits, corn bread, fluffy waffles and French toast. I like to spread Maple butter on freshly baked banana bread or blueberry muffins.

How To Make French Toast

Start by making an egg custard to dip the bread slices. Combine half-and-half (4 tbsp), eggs (2 large), vanilla (1 tsp), sugar (1 tsp) and a pinch of salt. Whisk these ingredients together.

Then soak the cinnamon bread slices in the egg batter. Let them sit for 2 to 3 minutes until the custard has completely soaked the bread all the way through, but not saturated enough that the bread slices fall apart.

Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter 1 (tbsp). You want the skillet to be large enough to hold both slices of the French toast while they cook. Let the slices cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side and golden brown. The internal temperature should reach 165 degrees.

What Kinds Of Meat Does Burger King Offer For The French Toast Sandwich

Burger King offers 3 different meat selections for the French Toast Sandwich.

  1. Black Forest Ham. The ham has a distinctive salty and smokey flavor. You’ll be able to find this in any deli or grocery market sold under different brand names. We usually suggest that whenever you order sliced deli, have it sliced fresh and thin.
  2. Bacon. Thick cut smoked slices of bacon. The restaurants use of beacon doesn’t stop with breakfast and can be found throughout the menu including the Bacon King, Double Stacker King and the Texas double Whopper.
  3. Sausage. The sausage is a traditional breakfast sausage patty made with pork, sage, onion, red pepper, salt, pepper and what seem to be a hint of Maple flavoring. You can find a recipe for our quick breakfast sausage by checking out sausage and biscuits with cream gravy.

I would not be surprised to see that Burger King begins to offer Impossible breakfast sausage as an alternate. This would appeal to potential vegetarian customers. You can ask for their turkey sausage patty if you do not care for the pork version, so I believe that’s its possible to order the Impossible sausage as a substitute as well.

For our copycat recipe of Burger Kings New French Toast sandwich we decided to load up the sandwich with crispy bacon slices.

How To Cook Perfect Bacon Strips

To cook bacon strips perfectly crisp, start by lining a baking tray with parchment paper. Lay out the bacon strips evenly on the parchment paper making sure that they are not touching. Put the tray of bacon into a cold oven and then turn on the oven and set the temperature to 400 degrees.

Now, Set the timer for 20 minutes. Checking on the bacon after 18 minutes. Remove the bacon if done the way you like and drain on paper towels. If you like your bacon extra crispy, let it cook for 2 to 3 more minutes.

Fluffy Egg Mini Omelet

There is something uniquely absurd about square omelets without fillings. Why not just scramble an egg? An omelet definitely takes more skill than scrambled eggs, but don’t worry about it at all!

We are after a creamy omelet that is not brown, burned or crispy. Our omelet is going to be fluffy and tucked with much more flavor.

Here’s how to make a fluffy plain egg omelet to fill the French toast sandwich.

In a small bowl crack fresh eggs (2 large), add half-and-half (1 tbsp) and whisk the eggs until fully combined.

Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and add butter (1 tbsp). Let the butter melt to coat the bottom of the pan.

Pour the egg mix into the pan and slowly stir with a rubber spatula until the eggs start to set. Bring the edges of the eggs to the center of the pan.

Tilt the pan to fill the side space with any liquid egg.  Add the salt (pinch). Turn the heat down to medium low and let the omelet sit for about 30 seconds until the eggs seem almost fully set but still with moisture.  You want the eggs to be silky and creamy not raw. Fold the omelet in half and tuck the edges. Let the omelet sit on low heat for another 30 seconds to fully cook.

Assemble the French Toast sandwich by spreading the Maple Butter on each side of the bread. Now, place the mini omelet on the bottom French toast slice, then the bacon (3 slices) and finally American cheese (1 slice). Cover the sandwich with the top slice of French toast and serve while still hot.

This sandwich can be wrapped the night before and then microwaved or heated in the oven in the morning for an “on the run” breakfast sandwich!
