This is how to make beer bread when you’re at home and supplies are running low. You’ve got beer, flour and bacon. What are you going to do? Drink the beer and eat the bacon. OK, but since there are two of us in the house, I thought that prudence would be the best course of valor and a loaf of beer bread came to life. One of the first things I noticed when the stores were running out of everything, the yeast packets and jars were wiped out. I can only image how that’s all going to turn out! Self rising flour to the rescue.

What Ingredients Do You Need To Make Beer Bread
This hearty quick bread is made with 4 easy to obtain ingredients. However, it is easier if you are 21 years of age and have a license to buy beer. For this recipe you will need Beer, Flour, Sugar and Butter. Beer bread is an example of a quick bread, meaning that it is made without eggs or yeast, relying on the beer.
What Beers Are Best For Beer Bread?
The beer you choose isn’t going to have a dramatic flavor impact on your bread as you might imagine. Likewise, any kind of beer that you enjoy is the right kind. My preference is to use a lager or brown ale. In our recipe today we used a local beer that used to be brewed in Baltimore. Natty Boh. Short for National Bohemian. Natty Boh is still mostly sold in Baltimore and is brewed by Miller-Coors around the country.
However, there are several different types of beer to consider.
Lager
Lager‘s are the most common beers in the world. They can be pale, amber or dark in color. For example, different kinds of lagers include: Budweiser, Corona, Molson, Miller, and Heineken. In addition, Lagers are considered to have a brisk and bright taste.
Ale
Ales have a distinctly “hoppy” flavor and most have a darker color as a result of the addition of amber malts. India Pale Ale, Pale Ale and Amber Ale are all different kinds of Ales. Our favorite Ales for beer bread making are Newcastle Brown Ale, Landshark I.P.A. and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
Stout
Stouts are dark beers that are made with roasted Barley. Many bakers of beer bread swear by the addition of Stout Beer to their mix, as a result, Stouts will add a beautiful color to your finished loaf as well as some interesting flavors. Even though Stouts have a higher alcohol content, the alcohol will burn off during cooking. Guinness is perhaps the most famous Stout in the world and is considered by many to be the finest beer in the world.
There a quite a few variation on beer bread and you will find non-alcohol beer works just fine as well as carbonated beverages. I have tried root beer and ginger ale breads and they were terrific too!
How To Easily Make Great Beer Bread
First, make the batter by combining all the dry ingredients in a bowl and whisk together. Second, add the beer and melted butter, stir until nicely combined. That is really the hardest part of this recipe, the stirring. Third, pour the batter into a lightly greased loaf pan, smoothing out the top with a spatula. To grease the loaf pan, simply brush the pan with a little melted butter or spray with cooking spray. Finally, put you bread batter into a preheated 375 F degree oven for 55 to 60 minutes to cook. It’s done when a stick is inserted into the center and comes out cleanly with no sticky batter.
What Can You Eat With Beer Bread
Because beer bread is a hearty crusty bread, it can be served with many types of meals that are considered “hearty”. Barbecue, breakfast, stews, and any other combination of staple comfort foods. Here are some of our favorites to go with our quick bread.
Barbecue
There are so many different types and styles of barbecue around the world, it is going to be difficult to say which one is the best for our crusty loaf. So we’ll just say all of them! Beer bread, warm from the oven, easily can replace traditional cornbread as a side dish to help sop up all the delicious sauce from the barbecue. Because it it so sturdy, it also holds up well in pulled pork and brisket sandwiches.
Breakfast
A heart breakfast with warm toasted beer bread is a wonderful way to start the day. Our go to Saturday morning hearty breakfast consists of Fried eggs over easy, bacon, sausage and home fried potatoes. As an alternate, you could go all English and fry the slices of bread in the sausage and bacon drippings.
Stews
When we are in the mood for something hearty and comforting, a big bowl of stew or chili will always do the trick. A chili bowl full of beef, beans, tomatoes and chilies. However, if you are a fan of traditional Texas style chili, the kind without beans, you are more than welcome to butter up some warm bread and soak up your chili too.
